History
Carnelian’s name originates from the Cornel cherry because of its resemblance to the fruit. It also relates to the Latin word caro, or carnis, meaning flesh. Historically, Carnelian has been found in Greece, Egypt, Phoenician, and Rome. In a region near Pakistan, carved carnelian remains have been discovered dating back to 4000-5000 BC. It was often carved into Signet rings to be used as a stamp for wax.
Physical Properties
Carnelian is a form of chalcedony in the quartz family. Most commonly it comes from Brazil and Uruguay, it can also be found in India, Siberia, Botswana, and Germany.
